HOW WE BEGAN

Our team began as “My Other Half” and was started by twin sisters, Joannie Witt and Jeannie Evans who referred to one another as my other half.  These sisters have now participated in 11 breast cancer walks in celebration of Joannie’s breast cancer survival raising over $100,000 together over that period.

The six original team members had met while training and walked together in 2002 during the final “Avon” 3-Day Walk.  In addition to Joannie and Jeannie, those members included Diane Turner, Judie Watson, Ann Carder and Olivia Rollins. Team My Other Half invited the others to join their team in 2006 and the rest, as they say, is history.

After the 2005 walk, we decided on a more appropriate name and became the “Circle of Friends” team.  That name has become very fitting for our group of friends and family which continues to grow.  Our Circle like all others is never-ending and continues to grow – from six members to more than twenty members.  It consists of mothers and daughters and daughters-in-law, sisters, twin sisters, aunts and nieces, cousins, best friends, life-time friends, old friends, new friends, friends of friends, and on and on.  Our team members span the North Georgia mountains to South Georgia and even Florida.  We live in Dahlonega, Dawsonville, Gainesville, Brunswick, Hampton, Peachtree City and Ft. Lauderdale.  Our ages range from twenty-two to seventy-two.  Olivia is always one of the oldest walkers of any walk that she does.

Three members of our team have finished in the top five individual fundraising spots for the past two years. Our 2006 fundraising goal was $50,000.  Not many of our teammates believed that we could achieve that goal. Not only did we achieve that goal - we exceeded it!  The Circle of Friends team raised almost $58,000 and finished in second place out of 123 teams - only to be outdone by the Q100 Radio Station with 132 members. In 2006, team member Judie Watson, a breast cancer survivor, raised over $10,000 and finished in second place out of almost 800 walkers.  Team member Joannie Witt, the top fundraiser for 2005, finished with almost $9,000 in third place.  Team member Diane Turner finished in fourth place with almost $8,000. These same three members were the top three individual fundraisers in 2005.  We have been described as pushy broads and shameless but we really don't mind since all of our efforts benefit breast cancer research and awareness for the metro Atlanta area.  Our 2007 fundraising goal has been set at $75,0000, and we hope to exceed that goal also.
